The City of Prince Rupert has unveiled its 2026 Draft Budget, outlining plans to sustain essential services while advancing major infrastructure projects. The proposed three-point-seven percent property tax increase reflects inflationary pressures and ongoing contractual obligations, according to staff.
The 2026 plan continues the city’s focus on renewing critical infrastructure. Key projects include significant upgrades to the Second Avenue Bridge, continued work under the BIG Project to replace aging water and sewer lines, leachate treatment at the landfill, and a new chlorination station to enhance water quality. Engineering designs for future water treatment and the replacement of the submarine water line are also moving forward.
Beyond infrastructure, residents will notice improvements to public spaces, with grant-funded upgrades to Rotary Waterfront Park, Mariners Park, and the memorial plaza downtown. The plaza will also include new elements honouring Japanese Canadians displaced during the Second World War.
Public consultation is underway, with in-person sessions scheduled throughout November and online engagement open until November 14. City Council is expected to consider public feedback and adopt the 2026 Budget in December.
