The RCMP’s North District Major Crime Unit and Houston RCMP are renewing their call for public assistance in the disappearance of Michael Kowalchuk, who has been missing for over a year.
Kowalchuk was last confirmed seen in Prince Rupert in July 2024. At the time, he was driving a white 2003 Cadillac Escalade. Police now believe that same vehicle was located burned and destroyed on an unassigned road off Highway 118, just south of Granisle, in late summer of last year.
The vehicle was found by a member of the public but was not reported to police immediately. Investigators say other items were initially present near the vehicle but were no longer at the scene when police were alerted. These items may have included bags, clothing, or tools.
The area where the Escalade was found is known to be frequented by hunters, campers, and tree planters, and police believe someone may have unknowingly come across valuable evidence.
Anyone who may have seen the vehicle, captured photos or videos in the area, or picked up any items nearby is urged to contact Houston RCMP at 250-845-2204.
Investigators continue to treat the case as suspicious and are working to piece together Kowalchuk’s movements and what may have happened to him.
