Northern Health is implementing major service changes at the Quesnel Urgent and Primary Care Centre (UPCC) starting October 6, 2025, aimed at improving patient care and reducing frustration around access.
Under the new triage model, all patients visiting the UPCC will be assessed by a nurse when they arrive. Care will be provided based on the urgency of medical need, not the order of arrival. Depending on their condition, patients may be seen the same day by a physician, nurse practitioner, or another health provider.
Patients with less-urgent needs, such as minor ailments or prescription renewals, may be offered a next-day appointment, or referred to other services such as a pharmacist, their regular care provider, or community resources. Some visits may also be done by phone or video.
Previously, once daily appointment spots were filled, patients were routinely turned away—often requiring multiple visits. Northern Health acknowledges this was frustrating and is confident the new model will offer a more equitable and efficient approach.
UPCC hours remain Monday to Friday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., and weekends and holidays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. However, plans are underway to extend weekend and holiday hours.
Northern Health says the Quesnel UPCC remains a vital resource for residents without a regular family doctor or nurse practitioner and is committed to improving timely access to urgent and primary care across the region.
