The Nisg̱a’a Lisims Government is supporting the re-introduction of federal legislation aimed at strengthening oversight of modern treaty commitments.
Bill C-10 would establish an independent Commissioner for Modern Treaty Implementation. The office would monitor, review, and report on how well federal departments are delivering on promises made in modern treaties with Indigenous nations.
The Nisg̱a’a Nation says the bill reflects more than twenty years of advocacy by Indigenous treaty holders, working closely with Ottawa to push for better federal accountability.
The legislation was first introduced in 2024, but progress was stalled when Parliament was dissolved earlier this year. Its re-introduction is being celebrated as a key step toward reconciliation and improved treaty implementation.
The Nisg̱a’a government says this is not a partisan issue and is urging all Members of Parliament to support the bill. They emphasize the importance of ensuring that constitutional obligations and treaty commitments are fully met.
With Bill C-10 back on the table, the Nisg̱a’a Lisims Government says it’s ready to work alongside the federal government to ensure the legislation becomes law and that meaningful oversight becomes part of the treaty process.
