With the first day of fall officially behind us, communities across the Northwest are turning their attention to Thanksgiving — and for many families, it’s a time of real need.
The annual BC Thanksgiving Food Drive is happening this Saturday, September 27, in Prince Rupert and Port Edward. Volunteers will begin picking up donations from doorsteps starting at 9:00 a.m.
If you received a donation bag in your mailbox, you’re encouraged to fill it with non-perishable food items and place it outside by 9 a.m. for collection.
Most-needed items include peanut butter, canned beans, vegetables, fruit, pasta, and canned meat.
Any donations not picked up by noon can still be dropped off at Save-On-Foods, Safeway, or the Salvation Army Food Bank at 25 Grenville Court. The food bank is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The demand for food bank services continues to grow, driven by a combination of layoffs, rising grocery and housing costs, and fewer budget-friendly shopping options in the region.
Online donations can be made at princerupertsa.ca, and volunteers are always welcome — especially with the Christmas Kettle Campaign just around the corner.
