The City of Prince Rupert is attending the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) conference this week, with a focus on securing essential provincial support for the region’s growth and sustainability. Mayor Herb Pond and the City’s senior staff are engaging with provincial ministries to push for policy changes and strategic investments in critical areas.
One of the top priorities is upgrading the city’s water treatment infrastructure. The delegation is presenting physical water samples and five years of data showing frequent water quality notices to stress the urgency of provincial funding for a modern treatment facility.
Other issues include improving healthcare recruitment in northern communities, where attracting and retaining medical professionals remains a challenge. Prince Rupert is also advocating for changes to the Provincial Ports Property Tax Act, which has limited municipal revenue, and for funding to enhance the safety and resilience of Highway 16.
The City is also pushing for upgrades to regional power transmission systems to align with BC’s climate goals and support the development of a low-carbon economy. Senior staff are holding discussions on housing, emergency preparedness, and the cruise industry’s impact. These efforts highlight the City’s ongoing commitment to working collaboratively with the Province.
