On September 21, Prime Minister Carney announced that Canada will formally recognize the State of Palestine. This decision, part of Canada’s long-standing support for a two-state solution, aims to revive the possibility of lasting peace in the Middle East. The Prime Minister acknowledged the ongoing challenges to peace, citing Hamas terrorism and Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank and Gaza as key obstacles.
In his statement, Carney emphasized that this recognition is a reaffirmation of Canada’s commitment to self-determination and human rights as outlined in the United Nations Charter. However, he clarified that Canada’s recognition does not legitimize Hamas or reward its violent actions. The move aligns with Canada’s support for a comprehensive peace plan that ensures security and coexistence for both Israel and Palestine.
Carney further outlined that the Palestinian Authority has committed to reforms, including the holding of general elections in 2026, in which Hamas will not be allowed to participate. Additionally, the Palestinian Authority has pledged to demilitarize Palestine as part of the long-term peace process. Canada will work with international partners to support these reforms and deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, as part of the ongoing effort to create a stable, peaceful future for both peoples.
Canada remains a staunch supporter of Israel’s security, which the Prime Minister says can only be achieved through a two-state solution.
