In a landmark announcement, Prime Minister Mark Carney, alongside Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, unveiled a new Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Canada and Mexico. This partnership seeks to elevate ties between the two nations across key sectors such as trade, energy, and security, with a shared goal of making North America the most competitive and resilient economic region globally.
The partnership’s focus will include prioritizing infrastructure development, creating new security dialogues to tackle transnational crime, and fostering greater trade and investment. A forthcoming trade mission to Mexico, led by Minister Dominic LeBlanc, will help jump-start these efforts. The Canadian government is also investing $9.9 million in United Nations-led projects to assist migrant integration and combat illicit fentanyl trafficking in Mexico.
The announcement also highlights preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Prime Minister Carney named Adam van Koeverden as Canada’s FIFA Sherpa to ensure the event’s success. The World Cup is expected to generate over 24,000 jobs and add $2 billion to the Canadian economy.
Together, Canada and Mexico will deepen their cooperation to enhance supply chains, create high-paying jobs, and build a more secure and prosperous region for all.
