École Roosevelt Community School in Prince Rupert has a new outdoor classroom and expanded garden, offering students fresh opportunities for hands-on learning and food education. The Salmonberry School Garden, located on the east side of the school, features raised garden beds, planters, picnic tables, compost bins, a tool shed, and a greenhouse for year-round growing.
The project is a collaboration between the Prince Rupert Port Authority’s Community Investment Fund and School District 52, with PRPA contributing $57,000 to the total $117,000 cost. This marks the third time the Port Authority has supported outdoor learning spaces in Prince Rupert schools, following projects at Conrad Elementary and Lax Kxeen Elementary.
“This garden allows students from Kindergarten to Grade 5 to deepen their knowledge of native plants and develop confidence through gardening,” said Erika Bader, teacher and project lead. The garden also embraces Indigenous Principles of Learning to enrich the educational experience.
Since its grand opening in June, the school community has helped tend the garden and share in its harvest. The Salmonberry School Garden will serve as a valuable resource for education and food security in the Northwest for years to come.
