British Columbia is expanding its PreVenture program to over 80 schools, offering students valuable tools to manage stress, build resilience, and prevent substance use. The evidence-based initiative, which is designed for youth aged 12 to 18, teaches essential skills for navigating challenges such as peer pressure, identity development, and interpersonal conflict—key factors in preventing early substance use and mental health struggles.
The PreVenture program has proven effective in reducing substance use by up to 80%, as well as alleviating symptoms of anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. By equipping students with strategies for managing stress and maintaining mental well-being, the program helps young people stay healthy and confident in the face of life’s challenges.
With a $2 million annual investment from the Ministry of Health, the program is being delivered at no cost to schools. Since its launch, it has expanded to over 80 schools across more than 20 school districts in the province. The initiative reflects B.C.’s ongoing commitment to enhancing mental health and addiction services for young people, helping them live healthier, more fulfilling lives.
