Crystal Smith of Haisla Nation is one of 11 leaders appointed to the Indigenous Advisory Council (IAC), which will guide the new Major Projects Office (MPO). Prime Minister Mark Carney made the announcement, emphasizing the council’s importance in shaping the future of major infrastructure and resource projects in Canada.
The Indigenous Advisory Council will work closely with the MPO to ensure that major projects benefit Indigenous communities, creating opportunities for equity ownership and responsible resource management. Smith, alongside the other council members, will offer valuable insights to help ensure projects are developed in true partnership with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities.
The Major Projects Office, launched in August 2025, is tasked with accelerating regulatory approvals and coordinating financing for transformative projects that will help drive Canada’s economic growth. These initiatives are central to the government’s commitment to nation-building and building a stronger economy, while upholding Indigenous rights and sustainable development practices.
Smith’s appointment reflects the increasing role of Indigenous leadership in shaping Canada’s economic future, ensuring that Indigenous voices are central to decision-making processes.
