The BC Wildfire Service, in partnership with Gitanyow First Nation, will conduct a cultural burn project located about two kilometers northeast of Gitanyow. The burn is set to begin as early as Wednesday, September 10, 2025, depending on weather conditions, and will cover a total area of 15 hectares.
This cultural burn aims to reduce hazardous fuels in the area to protect the community while promoting forest health and resilience. The burn will also support the growth of black huckleberry plants and improve wildlife habitat, contributing to the sustainability of the landscape.
Using traditional and hand ignition methods, the fire management project is designed to expand the knowledge and capacity of the Gitanyow fire stewardship team, and foster collaboration between the community and BC Wildfire Service. This project is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Indigenous-led fire management and restore cultural practices.
Smoke from the burn may be visible to residents of Gitanyow, Kitwanga, and travelers along Highway 16 and Highway 37. The community is asked to stay informed about the burn’s progress and be prepared for any changes in smoke visibility.
