The Gyets Gitxsan will hold a significant two-day event on September 29 and 30 to mark the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. This event, hosted at the Gitwangak Community Centre, will bring together survivors of the Indian Residential Schools to reflect on their history and share stories of survival and strength.
The gathering will feature a research findings report from the Edmonton Indian Residential School project, followed by a totem raising ceremony on the second day. Commissioned by the Gyets Gitxsan IRS group, the totem pole symbolizes the pain, loss, and resilience of the Gitxsan people, and it will stand on the Gitwangax Lax yip territory as a reminder of the past and a symbol of survival and cultural strength.
The event will conclude with a public feast, and everyone is welcome to attend. Survivors and community members are encouraged to RSVP for the gathering, which promises to be a powerful and meaningful occasion in the journey toward healing and reconciliation.
