The Province of British Columbia is investing $6.7 million to continue funding low- and no-cost mental health and addiction counselling services, with a strong focus on northern and rural communities. This funding will support several organizations, including the Canadian Mental Health Association – Cariboo Chilcotin Branch, Central Interior Native Health Society, Dze L K’ant Friendship Centre Society, and the Quesnel Women’s Resource Centre. These local organizations are key to providing mental health support to people in the Cariboo Chilcotin, Hazelton, Gitsegukla, Kitwanga, Fort Babine, Lake Babine, Witset, Takla, Tlazten, Binche, Nakazdli, Yekooche, Smithers, Houston, and Quesnel.
The funding ensures ongoing access to mental health services, with offerings ranging from in-person and virtual counselling to outreach support. These services help individuals facing challenges such as trauma, grief, isolation, and economic hardship. This investment is part of the Province’s continued commitment to expanding mental health care across B.C., particularly for communities in need of specialized support.
