Smithers RCMP are reminding the public to avoid bringing replica firearms to community events after several were seen at the Bulkley Valley Exhibition and Fall Fair.
Officers observed young people carrying imitation weapons during the fair, prompting a warning about the serious safety risks involved. These replicas often look identical to real firearms, making it difficult for police—and the public—to tell the difference.
Because of their realistic appearance, police must treat all firearms as real until proven otherwise. That verification often can’t happen until the weapon is examined up close, which means officers may have to respond with force out of caution.
Police say carrying replicas in public, especially at large events, causes unnecessary alarm and places both fairgoers and officers at risk.
RCMP are asking parents to speak with their children about the dangers of bringing toy or replica weapons to public gatherings.
Their goal is to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone attending the fall fair. The RCMP thank the community for its ongoing cooperation and support.
