Terrace RCMP are investigating a scam targeting members of the Happy Gang Centre for Seniors.
On Tuesday, August 19, police received reports that the centre’s email account had been compromised. Since then, members have been getting emails and text messages from someone posing as the organization’s president.
The messages ask recipients to purchase gift cards and send back the card information — a common scam tactic used to steal money quickly and anonymously.
The Happy Gang Centre has confirmed that these messages are fraudulent. They are urging members to ignore and delete any emails or texts making these requests. The organization emphasized that they would never ask for gift cards or financial assistance in this manner.
RCMP are advising the public to be cautious when receiving unexpected requests for money, even if the message appears to come from a familiar name.
If you think you’ve been targeted by this scam or have already responded, report it to Terrace RCMP or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
Stay vigilant and share this information with others — especially those who may be vulnerable to fraud.
