In Fort Nelson, Northern Rockies RCMP are alerting the public to a fake gold scam following multiple arrests north of Pink Mountain on Monday, August 18.
Police received a report of two people attempting to flag down drivers on Highway 97, approximately 36 kilometres north of the community. The suspects were reportedly offering gold in exchange for gas money and were seen driving a black Dodge Caravan with Ontario licence plates.
While officers were on their way to the scene, they encountered two more individuals believed to be involved in the same scheme. These suspects were in a black Audi Q7, also with Ontario plates.
All four individuals were arrested. A search of the vehicles revealed fake gold hidden in a center console, along with cash and rolls of quarters.
Police say the vehicle owners are believed to be involved in similar scams in other areas, trading fake gold for fuel or cash.
RCMP are reminding residents to be cautious when approached by strangers offering valuables in exchange for help or money. If something feels suspicious, report it to police.
The investigation is ongoing.
