The shíshálh Nation has announced the discovery of 41 more potential unmarked graves at the former St. Augustine’s Residential School site in Sechelt, B.C. This new finding brings the total number of suspected graves at the site to 81.
Over an 18-month period, ground-penetrating radar was used to scan areas of the school grounds identified by survivors. The school, which operated from 1904 to 1975 under Roman Catholic administration, has long been associated with painful memories of children being forcibly removed from their families and subjected to abusive conditions.
Survivor accounts have described children being taken into nearby forests and never returning. The latest radar scans, while providing additional evidence, reflect what survivors have known for years.
In response to the news, the shíshálh Nation is asking for privacy as they process the discovery and continue their healing journey. They have invited the public to show support through acts such as wearing orange shirts and lowering flags to honor the lives lost.
The discovery highlights the ongoing impact of the residential school system and the importance of listening to Indigenous communities as they seek justice and healing.
