Kitsumkalum First Nation has officially announced that the date for their treaty ratification vote will be Saturday, November 1st, 2025. This vote will determine whether the Kitsumkalum people accept a treaty that would recognize their rights to self-governance, land ownership, resource management, and other benefits.
Chief Councillor Troy Sam shared that this date represents the culmination of over 30 years of negotiations and hard work by the community’s leadership. The treaty has been a long-standing goal for the Nation, which sees it as a vital step toward securing a better future for its people.
This treaty is part of a broader movement in B.C., where recent policy shifts have re-energized treaty processes and emphasized Indigenous rights and self-determination. The Kitsumkalum treaty will also strengthen relationships with both the Government of Canada and the Province of B.C., ensuring that Kitsumkalum can exercise its rights as a self-determined nation.
The upcoming vote is a chance for all Kitsumkalum members to have their voices heard in shaping their future.
