The Northern Development Initiative Trust has approved nearly $1 million in grants to support five projects across northern British Columbia, including two major initiatives in Bella Bella and Fort St. John.
Bella Bella Community School Society is set to receive $200,000 to modernize its gymnasium with advanced audio, video, and streaming technology. This upgrade will transform the gym into a versatile space for sports, cultural gatherings, and Elder events. The addition of streaming technology will allow community members to participate remotely, increasing engagement across the Heiltsuk Nation. The school expects to double annual programming and increase visitor traffic by 71% within two years.
In Fort St. John, the North Pine Farmers Institute was awarded $300,000 to expand its terminal grain bin. The new bin will increase storage capacity by nearly 48%, allowing the terminal to handle up to 100,000 metric tonnes of grain. This expansion will improve service for local producers by boosting storage and transport efficiency, supporting long-term business growth, and strengthening the agricultural economy in the Peace Region.
Both projects showcase northern communities’ dedication to economic development, cultural vitality, and regional resilience.
