Kitimat has officially opened a new compost facility at the local landfill, allowing food waste to be processed right in the community for the first time.
The project was made possible with $1.2 million from the CleanBC Organics Infrastructure Program and an additional $1.5 million in funding from LNG Canada.
With the new facility in place, food waste collected in Kitimat no longer needs to be transported out of town. The compost produced will initially be used for landscaping in public parks and gardens, with future plans to explore making it available to residents.
The move supports Kitimat’s expanded four-stream curbside collection program, which includes weekly food waste pickup, alternating garbage and recycling, and seasonal yard waste collection.
The composting program is another key step in advancing the District’s Solid Waste Management Strategy, which was adopted in 2020.
