B.C.’s police watchdog is recommending a review of RCMP practices in handling calls involving Indigenous people and individuals experiencing mental health crises. This follows an investigation into the 2022 death of a Williams Lake man. On July 10, 2022, police were called to a home where a man was reported suicidal and intoxicated, with a firearm. Despite several attempts to negotiate, including using tear gas, drones, and breaking windows, the man was found dead hours later from suicide.
While the investigation cleared police of criminal wrongdoing, it raised concerns about the RCMP’s approach. The report acknowledged long-standing systemic discrimination faced by Indigenous communities, emphasizing the need for change in police interactions. Williams Lake First Nation Chief Willie Sellars voiced frustration, urging accountability and improved relations between police and Indigenous communities.
The report also raised questions about the RCMP’s response to mental health crises, with experts suggesting that military-style tactics may not be the best option. The Independent Investigations Office has forwarded the findings to the Civilian Review and Complaints Commission, which is now reviewing the recommendations for possible changes in protocol.
