Smithers RCMP are reminding motorists to drive with caution this summer following a two-vehicle crash near town earlier this week.
The collision happened Tuesday morning, July 8, around 9:30 a.m. at Lunan Road and Old Babine Lake Road. Police say a pickup truck traveling toward Highway 16 struck the back of an SUV that had stopped for an animal in the road. The impact sent the SUV into a ditch. The pickup truck remained on the road. Fortunately, there were no major injuries reported.
After a brief investigation, RCMP issued the SUV driver a $368 ticket under Section 144(1)(a) of the BC Motor Vehicle Act for driving without due care and attention.
Police say the incident is a timely reminder about the importance of staying focused while driving. With more wildlife, visitors, and road activity during summer months, it’s critical to leave space, stay alert, and be ready for the unexpected.
Speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving remain the leading causes of fatal crashes in British Columbia.
RCMP are urging drivers to stay safe and help keep roads clear this summer.
