The Haida Nation’s new Ocean House at Tlaga G̲áwtlaas, Haida Gwaii, opened on June 1, shifting the focus of local tourism towards sustainability and cultural preservation. The lodge, now a symbol of Haida-led ecotourism, replaces a former sportfishing operation with a commitment to respecting the land, waters, and community. Ocean House is expected to generate over 40 full-time equivalent jobs, boosting the local economy while providing opportunities for local entrepreneurs. This shift from extractive tourism reflects the Haida Nation’s broader vision of building a community-driven, eco-conscious economy.
The Ocean House project is part of a phased expansion of Haida Tourism, which also includes Haida House at Tllaal Tlell. The new lodge offers a boutique hotel with 20 rooms, a spa, and an immersive cultural experience for visitors. The project was made possible with support from Coast Funds and the Council of the Haida Nation, and it’s expected to contribute significantly to the economy of northern Haida Gwaii. Ocean House offers a rare opportunity for visitors to experience the natural beauty and cultural richness of the islands in a sustainable way. For more details, visit our website.
