The Province of B.C. is investing $6 million in community projects aimed at mitigating the risks posed by climate-driven hazards, with a focus on flood protection and extreme temperature resilience. The Village of Hazelton will receive a significant portion of the funding—$3.6 million—towards a major flood-protection initiative. The funding will go toward building a new 1.2-kilometre dike along the Skeena River. This project, totaling $10 million, aims to safeguard the community’s infrastructure, homes, businesses, and cultural landmarks from potential flooding risks.
Another project focuses on protecting vulnerable residents from extreme temperatures. Lake Babine Nation has been allocated $61,000 to provide critical support for those at risk, especially the elderly and individuals with medical conditions, during extreme heat events.
Tamara Davidson, MLA for North Coast-Haida Gwaii, emphasized the urgency of these measures, noting that the province is committed to reducing risks associated with climate change. “These investments help safeguard our communities from the growing frequency of climate-related events,” she said.
