In response to B.C.’s growing housing needs, BC Hydro has made key changes to its Distribution Extension Policy, aimed at making electricity connections faster and more affordable. Effective July 5, the updated policy reduces the cost of connecting new homes and businesses to the grid by as much as 90%. For example, the cost of a simple connection to a new single-family home has dropped from over $800 to just $64.
The new policy is designed to ease the burden on homeowners and developers by spreading infrastructure upgrade costs across all future users. BC Hydro has also increased its contributions to system upgrades. The changes reflect growing demand for housing and are expected to help B.C. families and builders meet construction timelines at a lower cost.
The revised policy will support a range of developments across the province, with savings on larger projects potentially reaching thousands of dollars. BC Hydro’s $15 billion capital plan will further enhance grid capacity and reliability, benefiting both residential and commercial developments.
These updates come after extensive consultations with stakeholders, including the home-building industry, local governments, and other groups.
