Terrace RCMP say complaints are on the rise over the misuse of E-bikes and E-dirt bikes around the city.
Police say riders have been spotted speeding through residential streets, tearing down municipal trails, and even stunting on city sidewalks.
The growing popularity of these bikes has sparked confusion around the laws that apply. RCMP say many riders simply aren’t aware of the rules.
Electric dirt bikes fall under the same regulations as gas-powered ones. That means they’re for off-road use only—and not allowed on public roads, sidewalks, bike lanes, or any public areas.
Violations come with hefty fines and penalties, including:
-
$598 for no insurance
-
$276 for no license, plus demerit points
-
$138 for not wearing a helmet
-
Up to $368 for careless or dangerous driving
-
And a 7-day vehicle impound in some cases
More serious offences—like stunting, fleeing police, or impaired driving—can lead to criminal charges or civil forfeiture.
RCMP stress these vehicles are not covered by insurance, meaning riders could face personal liability in a crash. There’s zero tolerance, and even one ticket can affect a family’s insurance rates.
Police are urging riders and parents to know the rules before hitting the road—or the trail.
