With the Canada Day long weekend approaching, British Columbians are being urged to stay alert and prepared as wildfire risk remains high across many regions of the province.
The BC Wildfire Service says dry conditions, ongoing drought, and above-average temperatures are creating ideal conditions for wildfires. Multiple fire bans and open-burning prohibitions are in place and may change rapidly. Campfires should only be lit where permitted and must never be left unattended. A proper fire ring and clearance from trees and structures is essential.
People are also encouraged to prepare for emergencies by packing grab-and-go bags, checking their insurance policies, and creating a plan to share with family and friends. In high-risk zones, residents should follow evacuation orders and alerts without delay.
Roughly 40% of new wildfires are reported by the public. If you spot smoke or flames, call *5555 on a cell or 1-800-663-5555, or use the BC Wildfire Service app.
Drivers heading out for the holiday should plan for heavy traffic, check road conditions at DriveBC, and ensure vehicles are ready for long trips. Packing food, water, and supplies for pets is also advised.
The message is clear: be smart, stay safe, and be wildfire aware this weekend.
