A 25-year-old man was arrested on Monday after allegedly stealing a fishing boat and leading police on a high-speed chase off Prince Rupert, where he attempted to ram a police vessel. The stolen boat, taken from Port Hardy a day earlier, was spotted south of Prince Rupert. RCMP and West Coast Marine Services responded quickly, but the suspect tried to evade authorities, firing flares and threatening officers over the radio. The pursuit, which lasted more than an hour, was hazardous, especially given the darkness and unpredictable waters. The suspect’s boat eventually ran aground, and he was arrested without injury. No harm came to officers or other marine traffic, despite the tense situation. The investigation is ongoing, with charges expected. The stolen boat was recovered and towed away. The situation highlights the successful teamwork between local RCMP, the Canadian Coast Guard, and the Metlakatla First Nation in managing the high-risk operation.
