The Pacific Salmon Foundation is investing in salmon stewardship on Haida Gwaii — awarding $97,500 to Indigenous- and community-led projects.
The funding is part of a record $1.8 million dollars distributed across B.C. and the Yukon this spring.
One of the largest local grants $47,500 goes to the Tlell Watershed Society to upgrade a fish fence that’s been monitoring coho and pink salmon returns since 1999. The upgrade will boost safety and extend monitoring into low-flow years.
Another $50,000 is going to the Haida Fisheries Program to install a solar-powered camera system in the Copper River weir to improve fish counting.
The Pacific Salmon Foundation says long-term data like this is crucial as climate change alters river and ocean conditions.
