The Province of British Columbia is expanding its wildfire camera network through a new partnership with the University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBCO). This initiative, which received a $200,000 investment after a successful 2024 trial, aims to improve wildfire detection, response, and community safety. Using advanced 5G technology, the cameras detect smoke from wildfires, providing real-time data that helps predict fire behavior and supports emergency management, evacuation planning, and resource deployment. Early detection is crucial for reducing risks and minimizing suppression costs, ultimately keeping more families and communities safe from wildfire threats. Data captured by the network is analyzed using artificial intelligence at UBCO, offering valuable insights for first responders and public awareness. The camera network was initially tested in 2024 through a collaboration with Rogers Communications, Pano AI, and the BC Wildfire Service. With its expansion, the program aims to enhance wildfire preparedness across British Columbia. Local governments, communities, and First Nations interested in contributing to the project can reach out to the BC Wildfire Service for more details.
