In an effort to improve emergency response across the Bulkley Valley, the B.C. government is investing nearly $7 million into projects in Smithers, Witset, and Saik’uz. The funding will boost the capacity of local emergency operations centres (EOCs) to respond to climate-related disasters like floods and wildfires.
Witset will see the installation of essential equipment, such as radios and a backup generator, alongside training for staff to ensure more effective emergency coordination. This will improve the community’s ability to collaborate with regional partners, including the Town of Smithers, during disasters.
Saik’uz First Nation will use the funding to purchase a mobile office trailer, enabling better coordination and service delivery during evacuations. This will ensure emergency operations continue smoothly even during times of crisis.
The investment also supports regional efforts to improve emergency preparedness across the Bulkley Valley, ensuring that Smithers and surrounding communities are better prepared for future disasters. This funding comes through the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund, which has supported over 2,500 local projects since 2017, helping communities across B.C. become more resilient to the growing threats posed by climate change.
