On Saturday, June 7, Terrace will come alive with Olympic spirit as an original 2010 Vancouver Olympic torch returns to the streets for a powerful cause. The torch will lead the way in the Law Enforcement Torch Run, a 5-kilometre run and walk to raise funds for Special Olympics BC.
The run begins at 11 a.m. at the RCMP detachment on Eby Street and follows the Xpilaxha Trail, (formerly known as the Millennium Trail). Organizers faced a challenge in finding a suitable torch—until local history provided the perfect answer. Dave Jephson, a former Deputy Fire Chief and one of the city’s original 2010 torchbearers, still had his Olympic torch and offered to lend it. Jephson may even wear his original torch relay suit and is ensuring Special Olympics athletes get their moment with the torch.
The event finishes with a community barbeque, where top fundraisers and lucky participants will receive prizes. Local businesses have donated food, gift cards, and prizes to help support the cause.
The event is open to the public, and participants are encouraged to register online. Organizers say the torch is more than a symbol—it’s a reminder of how community and sport can change lives.
