With a potential strike looming at Canada Post, the B.C. government is taking steps to ensure that individuals continue to receive provincial disability and income assistance without disruption. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) issued a 72-hour strike notice, set to begin May 23. In anticipation, the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction is ensuring the May 2025 cheque distribution will proceed smoothly. Despite past disruptions in 2024, when 98% of payments were still delivered, the ministry is focused on minimizing any impact this time around. About 88% of recipients will receive their payments by direct deposit, and those who have not yet signed up can do so by phone, online, or in person at ministry offices. For those unable to attend, alternative arrangements, including designated pickups, will be available. Additionally, the Senior’s Supplement, a vital top-up for seniors, will be prioritized and delivered by Canada Post volunteers. People with concerns can reach out to the ministry for assistance and further options.
