Construction is underway for Northern B.C.’s first dedicated futsal facility in Prince Rupert. The Prince Rupert Youth Soccer Association (PRYSA) is building the 5,000-square-foot indoor court at 181 George Hills Way, with plans to open the facility in fall 2025. Named Ts’mtsaaw, which means “to be inside” in the Sm’algyax language, the facility will provide a much-needed indoor space for futsal, a fast-paced variant of soccer played with five players per side on a smaller court.
For years, PRYSA has hosted futsal sessions at local elementary schools but is now able to build its own dedicated facility, allowing the association to expand its programming. Prince Rupert is known for its heavy rainfall and limited outdoor soccer season, making indoor futsal crucial for year-round training. The new facility will offer more flexible scheduling, safer playing conditions, and host regional tournaments. It will also support other sports like pickleball, archery, and lacrosse.
The project is being funded through grants, reserve funds, and donations from local businesses and community members. With 75% of the required funds secured, the new facility will benefit local athletes, coaches, and officials while also serving as a regional hub for futsal and other sports.
