Smithers has been selected to host the 35th annual Minerals North Conference and Trade Show in May of next year. This marks the sixth time the town will host the event, having previously welcomed delegates in 1990, 1995, 2004, 2008, and 2016.
The conference brings together communities, industry leaders, and businesses from across northern British Columbia to discuss mining, exploration, and regional economic development. It’s regarded as a key opportunity to build business connections and promote responsible resource development.
Smithers town council voted unanimously earlier this year to submit a bid, despite some concerns about staff time. Around 400 staff hours are expected to be dedicated to the event between March this year and May next year, but the workload will be managed within existing department budgets.
Smithers’ long-standing connection to the mining sector and its previous success hosting the event were key factors in its selection. Planning will begin in the coming months to prepare for the major northern BC gathering.
