NDP candidate Taylor Bachrach faced an unsettling start to his re-election campaign in Skeena-Bulkley Valley after a campaign sign along Highway 37 was defaced with spray paint ahead of his Kitimat office opening on Saturday.
The vandalism, discovered by campaign volunteers, cast a shadow over the event, but Bachrach remained focused, urging supporters to respond by engaging in the democratic process rather than retaliating. He shared a photo of the damage on social media, emphasizing the importance of respectful campaigning.
Conservative candidate Ellis Ross also condemned the act, urging people to avoid such behavior.
With the federal election set for April 28, political tensions are rising, and sign vandalism is becoming more common across Canada. Bachrach, a former mayor of Smithers, continues to campaign on issues like economic recovery, environmental protection, and healthcare. His new Kitimat office will serve as a hub for volunteers as the race in Skeena-Bulkley Valley intensifies.
