The Heiltsuk First Nation in Bella Bella has taken a significant step toward self-governance with the adoption of a new constitution. In a recent referendum, 67 percent of members approved the constitution, which blends modern and customary laws, creating a legal framework for governance. The document outlines law-making powers, rights, responsibilities, and government structure while promoting cooperation between traditional bodies like the Hereditary Chiefs and Women’s Council, and the elected tribal council. The constitution also defines Heiltsuk citizenship and supports self-governance beyond the Indian Act. The new framework reflects nearly two decades of development, integrating Heiltsuk customs with modern governance processes. It will be formally enacted following a ceremony in the Heiltsuk’s Big House on May 30, solidifying the nation’s legal authority and decision-making power within its own community.
