Northern Health is establishing a temporary overdose prevention site in Dawson Creek while they plan for a permanent one.
The new temporary site will be located on the grounds of the Dawson Creek and District Hospital.
Though so far, no date or hours of operation have been confirmed.
It comes as the authority’s site had to be relocated, and following the closure of peer-led services at the same time a toxic drug alert was issued for the community.
Overdose prevention sites are not a safe consumption site, but rather a place for those who have used to go if they feel they may be at risk of overdosing.
Other services usually offered include education, naloxone training and provision, drug testing, and counselling.
Between June 1 last year and June 25 this year, 1,100 visits were made to Northern Health’s overdose prevention site.
While the temporary services are in place, the authority will work to find the best suited permanent location so it remains accessible to the vulnerable population.
