A new agreement with the Province will give the McLeod Lake Indian Band more control over land and resource stewardship on their territory.
It seeks to guide the two parties as they address the impacts of decades of over-development and work together to heal and restore the land.
Part of the agreement will establish a new revenue-sharing approach to support the Band’s priorities, while providing certainty for industry.
New land-use plans and protections will be established, and a new approach to wildlife co-management will prioritize areas of cultural importance.
A multi-year shared restoration fund will also help to heal the land through projects hand picked by the Nation.
With the agreement, the Band becomes the fifth Treaty 8 Nation to sign a collaborative land and resource planning agreement with the Province.
