Members of the First Nations Leadership Council are calling for government to better support First Nations participation in the cannabis economy.
In 2018, Canada legalized the sale of cannabis, but the process failed to include meaningful consultation with First Nations.
Five years later, the FNLC says Canada’s laws still do not recognize First Nations’ jurisdiction, or provide avenues for coordination.
They say that this has led to excessive taxation and onerous regulations, which are not in line with BC’s Declaration Act.
Now, they are calling for amendments to the Cannabis Act to address issues of taxation, jurisdiction, revenue sharing, economic development, and First Nations’ health and safety.
