BC is establishing a new administrative office to address the overrepresentation of Indigenous peoples in the criminal justice system and children and youth in care.
Overseen by the Ministry of the Attorney General, the new Indigenous Justice Secretariat will work in collaboration with all ministries.
It will be tasked with leading the transformative change needed to reform the criminal justice system and restore Indigenous legal practices.
Métis-Cree lawyer and newly appointed Deputy Minister Colleen Spier will lead the new cross-ministry Secretariat.
Spier was among the inaugural directors of the BC First Nations Justice Council when it was launched back in 2015.
By establishing the Secretariat, the Province is fulfilling a commitment made when they endorsed the BC First Nations Justice Strategy in 2020.
