BC is working to introduce a new nurse-to-patient care staffing model, unlike any other in Canada.
That model will allow nurses to spend more time with each patient by establishing a set nurse-to-patient ratio in all Health Authorities.
Once fully implemented, the model will cover licensed practical nurses, registered psychiatric nurses, and registered nurses in hospitals, long-term care, and community settings.
It will be supported by $750 million over the next 3 years to fill well-known staffing needs in the nursing sector.
That funding will go towards a new national and international recruitment and retention strategy, expanded education supports, and allied health and support teams.
Proposed ratios are 1:1 in critical care units, 1:2 for mental health units, 1:3 for specialized care, and 1:4 in inpatient and palliative care units.
Ratios in other settings are yet to be proposed, and all are subject to change.
