Police actions are not to blame for an injury suffered during a police-involved incident in Kitimat, according to BC’s Independent Investigations Office.
On the morning of January 13th, Kitimat RCMP were called out to the 200 block of City Centre for reports of a break and enter.
RCMP say they located a man they believed to be a suspect at the scene, who then fell while attempting to leave, resulting in serious injuries.
He would later confirm to investigators that the icy conditions would cause him to slip and fall while attemtping to leave down a nearby path.
While the officer’s initial call may have caused the man to attempt a quick exit, the IIO says it is not to blame for the injuries.
They say police were more than 50 metres away at the time of the fall, and that they were justified in calling for him to stop.
