A nearly completed expansion to Quesnel’s GR Baker Memorial Hospital has been given a name which reflects the territory it was built on.
Northern Health has unveiled a new Indigenous companion name for the hospital’s redeveloped Emergency Department and ICU addition.
Created in partnership with local First Nations, the three-line name combines English with the Carrier and Chilcotin languages.
Its first line; Dune Soonunakehududzuk is Carrier.
The second; Deni Belh ?Ats’enanx is Chilcotin.
And the third: The People Are Healing, is English.
Naming options were discussed between Northern Health and the Nazko, Lhtako Dene, ?Esdilagh, and Lhoosk’uz Dene First Nations for several months.
An update on when the wing, which is nearing substantial completion, will open is expected in the coming weeks.
