A new audit has found that Indigenous people in BC’s correctional facilities are not consistently provided with the support services they need.
Conducted by the Office of the Auditor General of BC, the audit examined the files of 92 Indigenous clients between 2019 and 2021.
During that time, 90 percent of Indigenous people in provincial custody had been diagnosed with a mental health or substance use disorder.
Despite that, 28 percent of clients never received the services identified in their initial screenings.
While all clients who had a care plan established received adequate access to services, more than a third of clients had no care plan in place.
In addition, the Provincial Health Services Authority failed to conduct the required reviews of files, and rarely created discharge plans.
Four recommendations have been accepted from the report by the PHSA, all focused on better reporting, care planning, and reviews.
