BC Liberal Leader Kevin Falcon has revealed his plan to overhaul mental health and addictions supports in the province.
That plan features an initial investment of $1 billion in operating funding over the next 3 years, and half a billion in capital.
It focuses on establishing an accessible and affordable recovery-oriented system which removes financial barriers and simplifies the process.
Under the plan, user fees at publicly funded addictions centres would be replaced with government funding.
A minimum of 5 regional recovery communities would be established to support individualized, holistic, long-term treatment, including Indigenous-specific options.
Falcon also wants to ensure highly specialized mental health support is available across the province, by building new facilities using the Red Fish Healing Centre’s model.
His plan would also bring forward legislation allowing the limited use of involuntary treatment, and designate treatment centres inside correctional facilities to provide treatment to inmates.
