In an effort to combat the overdose crisis, the province is decriminalizing the possession of small amounts of certain illegal drugs.
Beginning tomorrow, adults in BC will no longer face criminal charges for possessing less than 2.5 grams of cocaine, opioids, methamphetamine, or MDMA.
Instead of arresting individuals or seizing drugs, officers will instead recommend available local supports, and treatment and recovery options.
But, that only applies to drugs being held for personal use, those intending to sell or traffick the drugs will still be subject to criminal charges.
Those found in possession of drugs on school grounds, or near child care facilities will also still face criminal penalties.
They hope that decriminalizing the drugs will remove some of the stigma and barriers preventing users from getting the care and support they need.
A complete list of drugs included in the exemption is available here.
