Two projects which support the monitoring and research of salmon populations in the Skeena watershed are getting a fresh funding boost.
Through their Skeena River Salmon Enhancement Program, the Prince Rupert Port Authority is investing $94,000 in the projects.
A partnership with Lax Kwa’alaams Fishing Enterprises will see just over $70,000 of that go towards their Multi-Year Juvenile Salom and Eulachon Inventory Study.
That project seeks to develop benchmarks for salmon habitat restoration by surveying and analyzing populations of their preferred prey; eulachon.
Another $24,000 will support the Chicago Creek Community Environmental Enhancement Society’s fish fence replacement at Mission Creek.
By repairing the aging fence, Coho and Pink populations pass by critical counting sites, and continue to have access to important habitats.
Since its establishment in 2019, the PRPA’s program has invested over $365,000 into salmon rehabilitation projects in the Skeena watershed.
