A man who threw another man over a bridge near Williams Lake in 2019 has been sentenced to life in prison.
In April, 27 year-old Jayson Gilbert pleaded guilty to charges of second degree murder, kidnapping, and attempted murder.
Those charges stem from an incident on August 8th, 2019, in which Gilbert abducted two locals, and threw them over the Rudy Johnson Bridge.
According to police, Gilbert abducted 34 year-old Branton Regner, and his girlfriend Chantelle Laplante, before driving them to the bridge.
There, he threw both over, with Regner’s deceased body being discovered roughly 50 kms downstream from the bridge two weeks later.
Laplante was able to survive the dive and swim to a nearby island, before seeking out help the following day.
Gilbert will now serve 18 years in prison before becoming eligible for parole.
In 2020, Gilbert was also charged with kidnapping and attempted murder relating to the death of Richard Duncan, also in August of 2019.
Michael Drynock and Jordell Sellers were also facing charges in relation to the incident, though Drynock has since been found not guilty.
Charges against Sellers, meanwhile, were stayed while he fights unrelated charges stemming from a shooting at this year’s Williams Lake Stampede.
